The safest, most hygienic way to use water coolers for drinking or filling cups or other containers is with the water jet sending the water upwards.
There is currently no scientific evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 virus (cause of the COVID-19 illness) is transmitted by water; in fact, all indications seem to be that it is
not transmitted by water.
In a statement on the 6th of April 2020, the Spanish Ministry of Health concluded that the current disinfection treatment of water in Spain ensures an adequate level of protection of water for consumption, making it safe for drinking, cooking and hygienic use.
Even so, Canaletas reminds all uses that the safest and most hygienic way to use water coolers for drinking or filling cups or other containers is with
the water jet sending the water
upwards. This is for several reasons:
- The jet is protected by a guard so that the mouth cannot reach it.
- Any container must be refilled in the section of the jet of water that is falling. It is physically impossible to do so touching the jet.
- The outward flow of water prevents any bacteria or virus being able to return through the water.
- The unused water goes directly to the drain. In the case of drinking water fountains with cup fillers or bottle fillers, they may be used safely if care is taken not to touch the end of the tube to the mouth of the bottle.
The removal of the water jet may be counterproductive, as any person who wishes to drink if they do not have a cup or bottle may decide to drink directly from the cup filler.
We recommend cleaning the upper plate of the drinking water fountain more frequently than usual with an alcohol based disinfectant, and never with a sodium hypochlorite (bleach) based disinfectant.
