Why is it important to stay hydrated?

Good hydration is essential, especially during times of high temperatures and particularly for the elderly and children, as well as for people who suffer from different pathologies, such as heart disease.
However, hydration is not only important in summer. Experts point out that, although in winter we feel less like drinking water, for our body it is still just as important as at other times of the year. Having a drinking water fountain or a water dispenser nearby will help us meet this goal.
In addition, among lower-risk people such as those in middle-age, it is also essential to constantly maintain good levels of hydration, but never more so than when performing tasks that allow no margin for error, such as driving. The International Chair for Advanced Studies in Hydration (CIEAH) defines the state of dehydration as the state in which the body is found when the water balance is negative. It is usually accompanied by alterations in the balance of mineral salts, sodium and potassium.
The body primarily loses water as urine through the kidneys, and through the skin as sweat. The level of water we lose varies depending on the diet we follow, the intensity of our physical activity, and according to our fluid intake. The balance, which varies throughout the day, is achieved when these losses are compensated with the intake of food and water. Therefore, wherever we are, it is important to maintain adequate levels of hydration. Adequate hydration (normohydration) is essential to maintain health and well-being. The European Food Safety Authority recommends an intake of 2.5 litres for adult men and 2 litres for adult women.
